How to Make a DIY Home Sign

As the weather gets cooler, and we start spending more and more time indoors, it’s time to think about what we can do to spice up the interior of our homes. We’re sure you’ve seen wooden signs with sayings on them in nearby stores and on social media. But maybe you weren’t altogether happy with what was written on them or their color. This is why we offer custom orders, but there is another option: a DIY home sign.

Thankfully, making a DIY home sign isn’t too difficult. Today, we’re going to give you the basics of how to make a home sign on your own. This will be done with materials you probably have lying around your house, or that you can buy cheaply. With practically endless customizability, these DIY signs will light up your home with a simultaneously rustic and modern touch.

How to Make a DIY Home Sign

Today, we’re going to show you how to make a DIY home sign.

What You Will Need

  • Plywood of your desired size
  • Two colors of paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Hot glue gun / nail gun (optional)

Paint the Sign

Remember how we said you needed two colors of paint? One of these is going to be for the background, and the other will be the color of your text. Since we’re going to be painting the letters onto the board directly (instead of using a cutting machine), you should paint the board the background color. This is as simple as can be—just fill in the board completely, and let it dry.

Draw Your Letters

Once you’ve decided on your saying (check out our shop for inspiration!), it’s time to draw your letters on the board. Here’s the tricky part. If you’re an immaculate artist, you might not have too much difficulty drawing your letters freehand. But many of us don’t have that kind of skill. One option in this case is to use stencils to make sure your letters look good. If you’re more technologically inclined, you could create your design digitally and use a projector to guide your hand.

Build Your Frame

This step is completely optional, because a wooden sign of this sort might look just fine without a frame. If you choose to build a frame, however, it’s pretty simple. 1×2’s are a good choice for most plywood. Just measure the sides of your sign, and cut the frame accordingly. You will probably want to paint the frame as well; for this, using the color of your letters will help to set off the text. Finally, attach the frame to the board with a nail or hot glue gun!

When all that’s done, take a step back and admire your work. Your enjoyment of your home sign is sure to be amplified by the pride you feel at having created it yourself. It will brighten your home for years to come.
